HORN. B. W. 1985, Association of Candida gllillier/llolldii with amylolytic filamentous fungi on preharvest corn, Can, J, MicrobioL 31: 19-23, Candida gllillier/nondii var. gllillier/llondii was the dominant yeast isolated from preharvest Georgia corn and comprised 3,6-47.0% of the total fungi as measured by dilution plating. The yeast was confined mainly to kernels visibly molded by filamentous fungi. primarily Flisarili/ll /IIonili/emlle and Aspergilllls jlavIIs. When grown in liquid shake culture. Caml. gllillier/llondii was unable to utilize stareh. Growth of the yeast increased considerably when associated with amylolytic F. /IIonili/br/lle or Asp, jlavIIs. Utilization of starch hydrolyzates by Cal/(!. gllillier/llondii in mixed cultures was retlected by a decrease in reducing sugar concentrations and a reduction in growth of F, /IIonili/emne and Asp.j7al'lls, When glucose replaced starch as a carbon source. F. /IIonili/emne and Asp . .f7al'lls did not affect the maximum growth of Cal/(I. gllillier/llondii. The association between Caml. gllillier/nondii and amylolytic filamentous fungi on preharvest corn is probably commensalistic,

Identification of fungi species in the onychomycosis of institutionalized elderly*

BACKGROUND Superficial fungal infections are caused by dermatophytes, yeasts or filamentous fungi. They are correlated to the etiologic agent, the level of integrity of the host immune response, the site of the lesion and also the injured tissue. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study is to isolate and to identify onychomycosis agents in institutionalized elderly (60 years old +). METHODS The ...

Cross-reactivity of the PLATELIA CANDIDA antigen detection enzyme immunoassay with fungal antigen extracts.

We studied the specificity of the PLATELIA CANDIDA Ag enzyme immunoassay by using 130 isolates of 63 clinically relevant fungal species. Antigen extracts of seven Candida spp. (Candida albicans, C. dubliniensis, C. famata, C. glabrata, C. guilliermondii, C. lusitaniae, and C. tropicalis) repeatedly yielded positive reactions (>0.5 ng/ml). Geotrichum candidum and Fusarium verticillioides were fo...

De novo design of non-coordinating indolones as potential inhibitors for lanosterol 14-α-demethylase (CYP51).

The development of antifungal drugs that inhibit lanosterol 14-α-demethylase (CYP51) via non-covalent ligand interactions is a strategy that is gaining importance. A series of novel tetraindol-4-one derivatives with 1- and 2-(2,4-substituted phenyl) side chains were designed and synthesized based on the structure of CYP51 and fluconazole. The antifungal activities of these derivatives against e...

MFS multidrug transporters in pathogenic fungi: do they have real clinical impact?

Infections caused by opportunistic fungal pathogens have reached concerning numbers due to the increase of the immunocrompromised human population and to the development of antifungal resistance. This resistance is often attributed to the action of multidrug efflux pumps, belonging to the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) superfamily and the major facilitator superfamily (MFS). Although many studies h...

Determination of MICs of aminocandin for Candida spp. and filamentous fungi.

Candida and Aspergillus spp., as well as other filamentous molds, have increasingly been reported as the causes of severe invasive fungal infections. We evaluated the new echinocandin aminocandin (AMN) for its antifungal activities against a range of fungal pathogens by determination of the MICs for the organisms. The MICs of the comparator drugs amphotericin B, caspofungin, micafungin, and vor...
